Zanzibar Island

WELCOME TO

Zanzibar Island

Part of the Zanzibar Archipelago, Zanzibar Island (also known as Unguja) is a semi-autonomous Tanzanian jewel in the Indian Ocean. Steeped in a rich and complex history, it is a captivating fusion of African, Arab, Indian, and European influences. Famous for its historic Stone Town—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its pristine white-sand beaches fringed by turquoise waters, Zanzibar offers a stark and beautiful contrast to the mainland’s wildlife safaris. What defines Zanzibar is its intoxicating blend of spice-scented air, vibrant cultural tapestry, and a serene, tropical atmosphere that has lured travelers for centuries.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Zanzibar’s tropical climate is warm year-round, with travel seasons defined by rainfall patterns. The best time combines sunny days, calm seas, and ideal conditions for beach relaxation and water activities.
June to October: The coolest and driest period, coinciding with the peak safari season on the mainland. This is the ideal time for beach holidays, diving, and clear skies.
December to February: Another excellent dry season, characterized by warm temperatures. A very popular time to visit, especially around the holidays.

ICONIC WILDLIFE

The island’s heart is Stone Town, a labyrinth of narrow alleyways, ornate carved doors, bustling bazaars, and historic sites like the Old Fort and the former Slave Market. The spice plantations are a living legacy, where cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg are grown. The idyllic beaches of the east coast, like Nungwi and Kendwa in the north and Paje and Jambiani in the southeast, are famed for their powder-soft sand and stunning sunsets. The surrounding coral reefs are home to diverse marine life, including sea turtles.

EXPERIENCE & ACTIVITIES

Visitors can explore the history of Stone Town on a guided walking tour, haggle in the Forodhani Gardens night market, and embark on a spice tour to see, smell, and taste the island’s famous crops. Snorkeling and scuba diving in the clear reefs of Mnemba Atoll or around Prison Island are world-class. Sailing on a traditional wooden dhow, visiting a sea turtle sanctuary on Prison Island, and taking a day trip to the nearby forest of Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park to see the endemic red colobus monkeys are all quintessential Zanzibar experiences.
