Mikumi National Park

WELCOME TO

Mikumi National Park

Often called the “mini-Serengeti” for its resemblance to its vast northern neighbor, Mikumi National Park is the fourth-largest in Tanzania and the most accessible from the nation’s commercial capital. Established in 1964, it’s open horizons and sprawling Mkata Floodplain—a classic East African savannah scene—offer an uncomplicated and rewarding safari experience. As a key part of the vast Selous ecosystem, Mikumi serves as a vital wildlife corridor and is renowned for its reliable game viewing opportunities. What makes Mikumi exceptional is its combination of easy accessibility, starkly beautiful landscapes, and a rich concentration of wildlife that appears almost immediately upon entering the park gates.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Mikumi is a rewarding year-round destination, but the dry season offers the most conventional and concentrated wildlife viewing, as animals gather around predictable water sources.
June to October: The long dry season. This is the optimal time for wildlife viewing. The grass is low, water is scarce, and animals congregate around the Mkata River and other waterholes, making them easy to spot.
December to February: The short dry season. Another excellent period with good weather and reliable animal sightings. This is a popular time for visitors combining a trip with the Southern or Zanzibar circuits.
March to May & November: The rainy seasons. The park becomes lush and green, with many animals giving birth. Birding is spectacular, and the landscape is beautifully vibrant, though some animals may be more dispersed and roads can become muddy.

ICONIC WILDLIFE

The park’s iconic scene is the Mkata Floodplain, dotted with baobab and acacia trees, where large herds of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, and impala graze. It is one of the most reliable places in Tanzania to see the powerful greater kudu with its magnificent spiraled horns. Elephants are common, and predators including lions, leopards, and spotted hyenas are frequently observed. The floodplain is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with species ranging from the majestic bateleur eagle and lilac-breasted roller to countless waterbirds in the wetlands.

EXPERIENCE & ACTIVITIES

The primary activity is daytime game driving across the network of roads traversing the floodplains and miombo woodlands. Night game drives (with special permit and guide) offer a chance to see nocturnal creatures like civets, bushbabies, and hunting predators. Guided walking safaris in designated areas provide an intimate feel for the bush. Birdwatching is exceptional, with over 400 species recorded. Visitors can also enjoy picnics at the Hippo Pools or take in panoramic views from the Kisungura Termite Mound lookout.
